Knock Knees-Common Chilhood Orthopedic Condition !!!

As a child matures and begins to walk, knock-knees can develop as he or she tries to maintain balance on weakened legs. When a knock-kneed child stands up, his or her knees touch each other, but the ankles do not. The medical name for knock knee is genu valgum.

For adults, being slightly knock-kneed is a normal variation in alignment; many adults are somewhat knock-kneed. This is rarely a problem, and surgery is seldom undertaken to correct it. knock-knees were more likely to be injured in the intense activities of basic training.

  • Knees that touch when you are standing (but  ankles don’t touch)
  • Excessive outward or inward knee angle that may cause pain
  • Walking difficulty

What Causes Knock-Knees?

Knock-knees are common, often developing as part of the childhood growth process.
Certain diseases (like rickets) can cause permanent knock-knees, and an injury to or infection of the shin bone can also cause a knock-knee, if it's bad enough to impair bone growth. And children who are overweight are more prone to knock-knees, because their bones and joints have trouble supporting their weight.

In children the legs usually will straighten out as the child grows. However, if a case of knock-knees is severe or if it is still present at the age of five, medical attention is needed to prevent permanent problems.

Diagnosis & Treatment

The main way doctors diagnosis bow legs or knock knees is through physical exam. In addition, X-rays may be taken when needed to get more information about the knee joint.

Surgery is the only way to change the knee angle — for braces, shoe inserts and physical therapy are ineffective. Since normal leg development goes from bowlegs to knock-knees, surgery should be postponed until the child is at least 10 years old.
http://orthopedicsindia.com/deformity-correction-knock-knees-correction.htmlTwo bones meet at the knee joint: the femur (thighbone) and the tibia (shinbone). Surgical treatment depends upon the maturity of the child. In younger children, whose growth plates are open and still growing, knee alignment can be changed by tethering the growth plates of the femur or tibia using staples. As the growth plate grows on the untethered side, the knee will grow out of its excessive angle.
In older children, who no longer have open growth plates, treatment consists of cutting, straightening and then holding the bones of the knee in place while they heal with metal implants, including pins, plates and screws.
Although both treatments have high success rates, they should be done only if clearly necessary and at the appropriate age.

Advanced Bow Legs Correction and Procedures!!

For many new parents, the arrival of a baby is one of the most exciting experiences in life. Watching a new baby grow and develop, especially over the first two years of life, can be a time of joy, excitement but also frustration.
Of note is the concern many parents express during paediatric visits regarding the seemingly lower extremity growth deformity attributing to the appearance of bowed legs in the child. For many children, this bow leg appearance is simply a part of child growth and development.

Bow legs is a condition in which the knees stay wide apart when a person stands with the feet and ankles together. It is considered normal in children under 18 months. Babies and young children often have knees and legs that look awkward.
If a child has bow legs, the legs bow outwards when she or he stands. When your child stands with his or her feet together, the knees will be far apart. Bow legs are very easy to see at 12 to 18 months when your child starts to stand and walk. Standing and walking helps the legs to straighten.

Causes

Infants are born bow legged because of their folded position in the mother's womb. Bowed legs begin to straighten once the child starts to walk and the legs begin to bear weight (about 12 to 18 months old).

Severely bowed legs can be caused by rickets. Its a conditions. Rickets is typically caused by not getting enough or being able to properly use vitamin D.

Bow legs may be caused by illnesses such as:

    Abnormal bone development
    Blount's disease
Fractures that do not  heal correctly
Rickets, which is caused by a lack of vitamin D

Symptoms

  • Knees do not touch when standing with feet together (ankles touching)
  • Bowing of legs is same on both side of the body (symmetrical)
  •  Bowed legs continue beyond age 3

Exams and Tests

A doctor can often diagnose bow legs by simply looking at the child. The distance between the knees is measured while the child is lying on the back.

Blood tests may be needed to rule out rickets.

X-rays may be needed if:

The child is 3 years old or older
    The bowing is getting worse
Bowing is not the same on both sides
    Other test results suggest disease

Medical Treatments

If the bowing is severe or worsening, braces and surgery are the first options to be considered. Correction should be undertaken as early as possible, first with braces, and if this treatment shows no positive results, with surgery to correct the faulty knee structure. Otherwise the condition may eventually result in disabling problems of the knee joints.
Nutritional rickets is treated with large doses of vitamin D. The treatment of rickets that is caused by a genetic metabolic defect will vary depending on the nature of the disorder.

Bow legs that does not go away and is not treated may lead to arthritis in the knees or hips over time.

The procedure is done if patients are still feeling the pain symptoms during normal activities. The practice is done for patients who have knee diseases like osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis and arthritis. It can also be applied to patients who have knee injuries.

Total And Partial Knee Replacement

The two kinds of knee replacement. It can be partial or total replacement. The surgery further depends on the severity of the patient's disease or injury. The knee replacements method  can also be either metal or plastic.
Normally, the replacement can last for ten to fifteen years. There are non operative treatments to avoid the procedure. Patients are given physiotherapy or physical therapy or they can also do special exercises like walking aids. However, if these non operatives can no longer cure the surgery is done.

Traditional Vs Modern

The traditional procedure of the surgery is when the doctor cuts the knee about ten to thirty centimeters long, until they will reach at the knee joint. The diseased or damaged parts can be removed from the thigh to the shin bone. And after that physicians will then, shape the damaged surfaced with the metal or plastic replacements. Once the fitting process is done, they will put the knee replacement. The cut will be stitched and closed out.

Nowadays, they have discovered a modern method of doing the surgery. They call it Minimally Invasive Surgery. It is done by just making a small incision and by going between the fibers and the muscles without cutting the tendons.

Successful Surgery

After the surgery, the patients are encouraged to walk with aids in sticks or walkers.  physical therapists is there to assist them. It will take time for patients to fully recover. Perseverance and patience are advised for these patients. A knee replacement can be a wonderful way to improve your life if you are currently suffering from severe knee pain. Once the surgery is over, you will have the freedom to move without soreness or acute pain, which means that you can do more of your favorite activities.
