What Happens When Joint Pain And Knee Pain Go Untreated?

If you are a person, ignoring the adequate attention needed for your joint pain, you may end up facing a lot of problems in the future. If knee pain is reducing your ability to take part in the activities you normally do, then it is time to seek appropriate medical attention.

If left untreated this joint pain can lead to other complications and can significantly affect the quality of life.

What are the major reasons for joint pain?

Joint pain can occur for several reasons like, arthritis (joint inflammation) which includes osteoarthritis, psoriatic arthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, and ankylosing arthritis.

What are the complications?

Arthritis is the source of chronic pain that can be exhausting and debilitating. It can also lead to problems with disability, anxiety, and depression. Major complications are:

Disability and loss of function: Joint pain and arthritis affect tissues surrounding the joints, including tendons, ligaments, and muscles that stabilize joints. This condition weakens the joints and can lead to a loss of function and eventually disability.

Sleep disruption: Chronic pain in the joint may affect sleep and can intensify the pain in the coming days. Stiffness and limited range of motion can also keep you from getting a comfortable sleep and rest.

Weight gain: Pain and stiffness can decrease the interest to be active. You will start avoiding activities like exercising or even taking a walk. This will eventually cause unhealthy weight gain.

Social withdrawal: Disability, weight gain and chronic joint pain may stop you from participating in activities that used to bring you joy. This eventually can withdraw you from social activities.

Anxiety and depression: Weight gain, loss of interest in pleasurable activities, a change in appetite, sleep disturbances, difficulty concentrating, etc will gradually push you into anxiety and depression.

There are other complications like bone death, stress fractures, bleeding or infection in the joints, deterioration of tendons and ligaments around joints and pinched nerve.

If you are experiencing chronic joint pain along with the symptoms like fever, unexplained weight loss, swollen joint and muscle weakness it's important to make an appointment with your doctor. The Santpure hospital offers the best care for patients suffering from intense joint pain.

How Is Ceramic Hip Replacement A Better Option?

Hip replacement surgery is usually necessary when the hip joint is worn or damaged to the extent that your mobility is reduced and you experience pain even while resting. This surgery gives relief from pain due to severe hip arthritis or hip osteonecrosis. The traditional plastic-metal hip implants, done using Cobalt-Chromium in polyethylene socket have a higher rate of failure, especially among the younger people. The main reason for this is that these implants deteriorate quickly because of the high activity level of the people below the age of 50. This causes wear and tiny debris are produced around the joint which eventually loosens and causes the replacement to fail. This led to the popularity of ceramic hip replacements among all age groups.

What Are The Advantages Of Ceramic Hip Replacement?

  • All kinds of hip replacements give relief from pain due to severe arthritis. But the frequent revision surgeries because of the wear makes them less popular among the younger people. Less wear of ceramic implants leads to lower rates of re-visioning surgeries which make them more reliable.
  • As there is less number of re-visioning surgeries, there is also less bone deterioration.
  • There is no loosening of the joints for a satisfactory period as there is no debris produced by ceramic hip implants.
  • The durability of ceramic implants is for around 25 years thus making it a good option for people below 50 years of age who might have a high activity level.
The above-listed advantages are for all kinds of ceramic implants. Be it fully ceramic or ceramic-plastic or ceramic-metal.

Flat foot or fallen arches can be defined as foot that have low or no arches, which press completely against the ground. A normal feet has an arch which is an upward curve in the middle portion that usually raised off the ground when a person stand. Tendons are the tight bands that attach at the heel and foot bones that forms the arch.
In small children the arch may not be visible because of baby fat and soft tissue in the feet and it will usually appears as they get older. But in some people arch will not develop because the tendons do not pull together properly and results in flat foot.

Symptoms of Flat foot

The following are  some of the symptoms of flat foot and their subsequent problems:
  •  Pain inside the ankle
  • Flat foot pain
  •  Problem while running
  •  Uneven shoe wear
  • Lower leg pain
  • Swelling along the inside of the ankle
  • Feet may roll over to the inner side while walking

  Types of Flat Foot

Flat foot are of two general types; flexible flatfoot and rigid flatfoot. If a person have an arch while sitting or standing on their toes and the arch disappears when they stand with the entire foot on the ground it is a flexible flatfoot. If there is no arch while sitting or standing, it is a "rigid" or "true" flatfoot.
Causes of Flat Foot

Flat feet can arise from a variety of causes. The following are the most common causes:
  •  Abnormality present from birth
  •  Nerve problems
  • Damage of the posterior tibial tendon (PTT)

A surgical procedure to restore mobility and relieve pain in patients affected by severe knee pain and stiffness, knee replacement surgery are widely popular today. Knee replacement, also called knee arthroplasty helps in replacing the damaged portions of knee joint with artificial prosthesis made of polymers or metals.

The technical advancement today has helped in creating customised prosthesis to suit the specific requirement of the patient. These help in minimising discomfort and restore the ability for normal movement. They are designed to roll and glide naturally enabling comfortable bending motion as well.

Scope of knee replacement

Knee replacement is an ideal option in the following cases: -

  • When knee pain is severe and restricts mobility, disabling normal life
  • When all other treatment options like medications or physical therapy fail
  • When persistent knee pain affects the quality of life in your middle ages
  • When you are suffering from knee deformities like bowed legs

Knee replacement implants and procedures

Knee replacement procedures are of different types based on the severity of condition and the implants used. In case of severe irregularities of knee, the whole knee joint is replaced with prosthesis and the procedure is termed total knee replacement. The procedure can be completed within 2 hours. The implants have a long durability and lasts for a long time, beyond 15 years.
Partial knee replacement involves removal of only the damaged portion of the knee and replacing it with artificial prosthesis. These are popularly done in patients suffering from osteoarthritis.

Complete Solution for Hip Pain

When a severe hip damage occurs the hip replacement surgery is recommended. During the hip surgery, the damaged cartilage and bone are removed from the hip joint and they are replaced with new man-made parts. This surgery reduces the pain, relieves stiffness and makes the hip joint to work well. The patient is recommended to hip replacement surgery if and only if there is no improvement seen in medicines, physiotherapy, and exercise after the hip injury.

Partial Hip Replacement Procedure
Partial hip replacement is otherwise called hemiarthroplasty a surgical procedure where the femoral head (the ball) of the damaged hip joint is only replaced. The socket, the acetabulum is not replaced. This surgery is mainly done for the fractured or broken hips. This treatment is not a precise one for degenerative arthritis. The procedure takes 60- 90 minutes in the following order:
The incision is made near the front or back side of the hip, muscles and tendons. Then other tissues are removed to expose the femoral part and acetabulum. The hip is then positioned for exposure. The head and neck parts of the femoral head are removed. The femur channel is hollowed out for the femoral stem insertion. The femoral stem is pressed into the hollow centre of the femur with bone cement. The hip is then rejoined and the surrounding muscle and tissues are repaired back to the position.
Some pain will be experienced by the patient after the partial hip replacement surgery, which is treated with proper medication. The physiotherapy will help for the patient’s rehabilitation by teaching specific exercises to strengthen the leg and restore hip movement.
Dr. Santpure Shivkumar, has been doing practice for more than two decades and performed thousands of major surgeries. He is the renowned surgeon in performing Partial Hip Replacement Surgery in Maharashtra.

No More Worries About Knee Pain

Knee Pain is a general ailment experienced by all ages of people. Knee pain may take place suddenly after an injury or by the chronic medical condition. The discomfort level depends on the pain cause, the area of knee affected or the patients’ physical condition prior to the knee pain. In older people, knee pain can cause due to the aging process and weakened bone structure, wear and tear of the ligament, bone.

There are a number of reasons for knee pain. Some issues directly affect the proper function of the knees and cause pain. Other than injury, “arthritis” condition leads to joint deterioration and discomfort. Sudden sprains during the sports might start with severe knee pain.
Damaged Menisci
Between the femur and tibial bone, there are thin layers of cartilages located called Menisci. This connective tissue has the tendency to absorb the stress of lower extremities, and the layers may tear when a heavy pressure is given on the knee. It prevents and stabilizes the knee from abnormal movements. When the menisci are torn the knee’s proper function is affected.
Osteoarthritis generally affects all and women who are above 55 years are exposed to high risk of OA. It commonly appears in one or more joint bones in the body. Due to the loss of cartilage, the condition stimulates pain which causes the bones to rub together when the intense pain will be experienced. OA also forms from the congenital joint malformation, injuries due to sports and continuous strenuous work.
High Body Weight
People with overweight will experience severe knee pain while standing, walking since the weight places stress on the joints. The stress may produce loss of joint tissue as the femur and tibial ends rub together, produce friction.
When the medicines, therapy, and rest fail to alleviate pain, then the surgeon will perform knee Replacement Surgery.

It is otherwise called Knee Arthroplasty to relieve the pain and restore the function of the severely affected knee joints. During the surgery, the damaged bone and knee cap are removed and is replaced with an artificial joint made of high-grade plastics, polymers or metal alloys. With the help of such an advanced technology, the patient can choose his option from the varieties depends on the age, weight, activity. Such knee replacement surgeries duplicate the natural knee ability to roll and glide as it bends. There are two replacement surgeries called Total knee replacement and partial knee replacement.

Total Knee Replacement Procedure
In the total knee replacement procedure, both sides of the knee joints are replaced. The surgery takes 1-3 hours. First, the knee cap front portion is cut to expose the knee cap so as to get into that. The damaged ends of the femur and tibial bone are then carefully removed. Before fitting the prosthesis a dummy joint is placed to test the joint’s function. Finally, the prosthesis is fitted. The femur end is replaced by a curved metal piece and the tibial end is replaced by a flat metal plate and they are fixed with special bone cement. A plastic spacer is placed in between the metal pieces. The cut is either sutured or clipped. The dressing is done on the wound and sometimes the patient is advised with a splint to reduce leg movement.
