Knee Pain is a general ailment experienced by all ages of people. Knee pain may take place suddenly after an injury or by the chronic medical condition. The discomfort level depends on the pain cause, the area of knee affected or the patients’ physical condition prior to the knee pain. In older people, knee pain can cause due to the aging process and weakened bone structure, wear and tear of the ligament, bone.

There are a number of reasons for knee pain. Some issues directly affect the proper function of the knees and cause pain. Other than injury, “arthritis” condition leads to joint deterioration and discomfort. Sudden sprains during the sports might start with severe knee pain.
Damaged Menisci
Between the femur and tibial bone, there are thin layers of cartilages located called Menisci. This connective tissue has the tendency to absorb the stress of lower extremities, and the layers may tear when a heavy pressure is given on the knee. It prevents and stabilizes the knee from abnormal movements. When the menisci are torn the knee’s proper function is affected.
Osteoarthritis
Osteoarthritis generally affects all and women who are above 55 years are exposed to high risk of OA. It commonly appears in one or more joint bones in the body. Due to the loss of cartilage, the condition stimulates pain which causes the bones to rub together when the intense pain will be experienced. OA also forms from the congenital joint malformation, injuries due to sports and continuous strenuous work.
High Body Weight
People with overweight will experience severe knee pain while standing, walking since the weight places stress on the joints. The stress may produce loss of joint tissue as the femur and tibial ends rub together, produce friction.
When the medicines, therapy, and rest fail to alleviate pain, then the surgeon will perform knee Replacement Surgery.

It is otherwise called Knee Arthroplasty to relieve the pain and restore the function of the severely affected knee joints. During the surgery, the damaged bone and knee cap are removed and is replaced with an artificial joint made of high-grade plastics, polymers or metal alloys. With the help of such an advanced technology, the patient can choose his option from the varieties depends on the age, weight, activity. Such knee replacement surgeries duplicate the natural knee ability to roll and glide as it bends. There are two replacement surgeries called Total knee replacement and partial knee replacement.

Total Knee Replacement Procedure
In the total knee replacement procedure, both sides of the knee joints are replaced. The surgery takes 1-3 hours. First, the knee cap front portion is cut to expose the knee cap so as to get into that. The damaged ends of the femur and tibial bone are then carefully removed. Before fitting the prosthesis a dummy joint is placed to test the joint’s function. Finally, the prosthesis is fitted. The femur end is replaced by a curved metal piece and the tibial end is replaced by a flat metal plate and they are fixed with special bone cement. A plastic spacer is placed in between the metal pieces. The cut is either sutured or clipped. The dressing is done on the wound and sometimes the patient is advised with a splint to reduce leg movement.

Center for Joint Replacement and Advanced Orthopedics, Maharashtra is the leading hospital for all bone and joint complications. Dr. S. V. Santpure Shivkumar has been practicing as a Consultant Joint Replacement Surgeon since 2002 and performed thousands of surgeries with advanced technologies.
